Coleus transplant

Wellesley Hills, MA

I want to move a creeping coleus that has grown to almost 18 inches across. Is it safe to do so? Anything special I should do besides water.

If this is the only plant you have, I would just dig up half of it, pot it so you can pamper it for the remainder of the summer, then plant it out where you want it in the fall. This way you won't risk losing the entire plant. If the first half you move grows well, then you could move the other half later.

Coleus will not live thru a winter. We Coleus Addicts take Fall cuttings and root them in potting soil to over winter inside.
would love to see your plant and then I can give better advice.

TIP: Take several cuttings that have at least 2 to 3 inches of stem, and put them in a glass of water. After a couple of weeks, the cuttings will develop roots and you plant them up in some potting mix. Keep these indoors until all danger of frost is gone. Also -> remove any flowers immediately. If you let the flowers bloom, your plant will die shortly thereafter. Pinching out the tip growth on the stem will cause it to develop two new stems just below where you pinched. This makes the plant bushier.

Enjoy !!

Yes, you can root coleus and several plants that way, but water spouted roots are not as sturdy as soil grown roots.
