I just prune mine to shape (I assume you are talking about a corkscrew hazel, aka Harry Lauder's Walking Stick?). If you are leaving it outdoors, I would not prune it until it is dormant, or in the spring. However, if you are bringing it in as a houseplant, I would think you could prune it any time. Anyone else chime in here?

I've been working with a HLWS for several years. I prune it whenever necessary to keep the pathway clear. Certainly the sprouts from the roots can be done any time and I have to do that a few times a year. By the way, the stems that get cut off get saved for crafts of various kinds. Everyone loves those kinky branches. One bigger branch I cut off one year has become a fascinating walking stick. I say this tree is not very picky at all.

I would wait till after next springs catkins have disappeared, they are so attractive like little hanging jewels, I only ever prune mine if there are straight stems growing and I remove them, give a feed and mulch when you place into the new LARGE container as it will be in that pot for many a long year, remember they like cool roots and plenty to drink but, also like well drained soil, like all the other people, once they like you, they grow well and aint too fussy. Good luck with it, WeeNel.

I live in S.California. Have a 5 year old lilac bush, that is growing too tall. I think it is time to prune it but want to know when to do it, and where is it best to prune the plant? Also what kind of food.

Sunnymary, it's usually best to start your own thread with your question. More people will see it that way.

Pruning Lilacs should be done right after they're finished blooming in Spring. Anytime after that and you'll be cutting off next years flowers.
