Hi , thanks in advance for answering. As a new gardener who is learning as I go along, I am probly going to ask the silliest question ever. My question is...Will my self sowers be able to reseed if I have mulched my beds? Won't the seeds just lie on top of the mulch? Should I try to scrape away some mulch?
reseeding through mulch
Plants can often reseed through mulch...but the thicker the layer of mulch, the less reseeding you'll get. So I'd look at how thick your layer of mulch is--if it's really thick you may want to remove some of it to improve your reseeding (but the caution with this is the easier you make it for your plants to reseed, the easier you're also making it for weed seeds to sprout, so it's a tradeoff)
I've been letting my self-seeders reseed naturally through the mulch in my flowerbeds for the last few years and it's worked perfectly for me (I use about 2 to 3 inches of mulch). I have only perennials which I wanted to spread. As ecrane said, you do get fewer plants but, each year I have more plants to reseed. Now I'm to the point where I'm sharing many seedlings each spring with friends and relatives and have lots of beautiful flowers in my flowerbeds. Something to consider--through the course of the winter you will have rain/snow that will naturally push the seeds down through the mulch to the soil.
Thanks folks! I appreciate the imput. I am going to do half and half. I will take some seeds to plant elsewhere and others I will let nature take it's toll.
