Slugs - help

Anchorage, AK

The slugs have arrived and are out in force. The slug stuff at the garden store said not to use around dogs. Any other way to control or is my garden gone.

Diatomaceous Earth or DE. You can find it at the garden center or at feed stores.

Oh boy have I had slugs in my garden! Highly recommend using Diatomaceous Earth and break up some egg shells. Slugs do not like traveling on top of the crushed up shell; it cuts their precious skin. I purchased 2 dozen eggs, kept the eggs for eating, and washed the shells. I then crushed them in a ziploc bag and voila, instant "get-rid-of-em-slugs" concoction. I sprinkled it around plants as well as the border of my garden plot. It is a good idea to do this every few weeks depending on how wet your garden gets. I think I also made a good dent in the population by placing upside down planters nearby where they crawled and stayed. Next morning, I woke up and got rid of them. I don't like to kill the guys, but I don't want them eating the veggies!! It is a good idea to get out there at night to capture some and early morning. I have heard that placing an empty aluminum pie pan with cheap beer inside will attract and drown 'em too. Good luck!

Thanks.
My next door neighbor suggested the beer. It seems to be working. It looks like the smell or something draws them.

We've used the beer with success before. I just don't like having to empty the cups every morning. Ick! I've also used the egg shells with success before, too. Sometimes you have to do a couple of things together to rid the area of slugs. We also use a product called Sluggo Plus. It's supposed to be an organic product, but I'm not sure if it's good to use around dogs.

What about neem oil? I have heard alot of good things about it not only will it get rid of the pests it will shine your leaves too.

Gumball pods AKA monkey balls are suppose to be effective.

To me, they're not a nuisance enough to bring out the Neem oil. If you treat with beneficial nematodes in the fall and then in early spring you'll take care of a lot of the slugs.

Hello everyone!
I've enjoyed gardening for over 60 years even in adverse enviroments. I garden on the coast of NE Maine (next to Canada). Perpetual spring, and fog, and bright sun, salt water air...
I have 5 different varieties of slugs and snails attacking my garden at all times. They laugh at crushed egg shells, coffee, neem oil,

beneficial nematodes, granite sand, wet and dry sandpaper, asphalt roofing shingles, cedar shavings, poison bait or any bait (why

eat the bait when they can eat delphiniums?!), dryer lint, fuzzy hair..... They can crawl up copper sleeves to attack my cone flowers.

I've sprayed ammonia and Dawn solutions on my plants to kill the suckers, and my plants (due to the salt air) suffer. These slugs eat

every single plant including thistles, chicory, mint, sage, thyme and endive .

The only sure fire control in this enviroment is hand to hand combat. Water your plants just before sunset deeply. Wait about an hour or two. In one night, I can poke a pin into a 100 slugs and snails if not more.

My neighbor is an English gardener. I guess England has the same enviroment as here. Slugs aren't viewed as "friendly little fellows"... So get your war going. For every slug you eliminate, you're eliminating 500+ eggs, possibly saving some of your Schreiner's Iris collection, few of your $6/a bulb Lily plants. Amazing to dig under that beautiful lawn and find a wad of slugs 3 inches down. Yeech. Reminds me the Colorado potato beetles back in Wisconsin. They didn't like to share either...they want it all for themselves...

So! I am seeking an electric mat that shocks the suckers like bug zappers zap bugs. Anyone know of one>?

LOL, I agree, no holds barred when it comes to slugs!!

And ditto to the cabbage worms, which are eating everything and I have no cabbage-family plants growing at the moment!

Anchorage has now set a new record for wet days and that hasn't helped as the rain delutes the beer. I carry a salt shaker every time I go outside. Right now we seem to be about even, except they had a head strart.

Oh my goodness! You know i would say thats really horrible if I didn't understand completely!!!
