Can anyone tell me what will grow well in clay soil, in a shady location? I don't know the zone but I am asking for a friend, and she lives in Richmond, Va. Thanks KP

We have clay soil but we're further north (Western NYS). Here are the shade plants that seem to do just fine. Some areas of the garden are full shade, others part sun/shade-all perennials:
Hostas, astilbes, sweet woodruff (ground cover), cinnamon fern, vinca, Xmas/lenten rose, Japanese fall anemones, coral bells, and several types of grasses. Advice: start with small plants that don't require much digging and then add three inches of mulch every season to help amend the soil and experiment with shade plants from the gardening centers. The above plants are very hardy.
They won't be decorative, but they will open up the soil: Dailkon radishes or oilseed radishes.
