Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL _ want seeds?? as you know.. i have a bizzillion of them.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

umm Iam thinking ...yes = }

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OK -- I'll go grab some, when it stops raining.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

you gettin rain, gloomy here Iam going get out and fertilize and hope rain gets here !!! We just got a ticket in the mail from the Ill.toll road from june going to the R-Up ,I kept saying I think we missed a toll booth...No you cant...we will see... well we see now...we missed 3toll booths !!! That toll road is most awful, stop and pay and stop and pay, with the 4 tolls we did pay that meant we had to stop and pay 7 times for 44 miles...WHAT this is faster ???? Iam stilll laughing about it...We are not unseasoned road travelers..LOL

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

well -- the Ipass helps. no more stopNgo.
I know a lot of folks who do not live in IL that get them. then the tolls are not doubled.

you should get some rain... it's light - at least so far.
the radar shows a large green mass.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH -- back to the HH.

I googled Black Currant Whirl - http://summerhillseeds.com/alcea-hollyhock-black-currant-whirl-pi-244.html

and i also checked my records... it was the only other HH i Ws'ed aside from White.
the color is spot on, but the one in the image looks double, where mine looks single.
Who knows, maybe next year i may look different.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

A lesson well learned.LOL That HH is prettier than mine,I gave them away..I do have seed Just in case I change my mind.We got a bit of rain right after I finished fertilizing ,but not enough to really mention.must have fizzled on its way here !!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

huggergirl I hope you can save seeds to those Henry Eiler for the swap since they can be planted in part sun, I have a spot I've been thinking of planting some joe pye weed by my living room window and that article mentions that they would go good with those :) I really like the petals on those and the height :)

I went to a party last night and the girl that was driving had a guy with her when she picked me up and when I got in the car he asked me if I had any grass looking at all the flowers in the front yard LOL I told him that is what back yards are for LOL

Really I don't have a lot of flowers that aren't blooming right now my side yard out front looks about the same as all summer. I've been wanting to pull annuals up and find out how much space I'm going to have out there for perennials for next year and just can't bring myself to pull them all up when they are still flowering. I have taken a couple of pineapple sages up so my peony doesn't get burried again but that's about it but still have them in other spots.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Tamara -- we are getting pouring rain now [9pm-ish cst ] hopefully some will come your way.
no warning either... 2 flashes of light... then POURing rain.

Didnt do too much today... football was too painful to watch, so i went outside and tore down some of the morning glories. I bet that just tossed about 5000 seeds all in my lawn.... *sigh*

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

:) I had the brilliant idea to run some MGs up my lilies this summer. Looks great... not going to be so amused next spring though... should have chosen the Japanese kind that don't set as much seed!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Le,I havent harvested any seed heads from Henry Eiler yet,Maybe today.when is the swap ??? Ive never swapped seed before ,any help would be great. How do you clean the trash from the seed, say like zinnia seed ??? I dont mind the trash, someone else might.... Terese, the rain got really close to us,then fizzled.Great lighting show really great,a possible sprinkle today, better do a rain dance, with the Garden Hose,I am going to do some watering today,my cone flowers and shasta daisies are suffering....Ive never had blooming luck with MG and the JBs love to eat them. When do they bloom I was thinking its late summer ??? sun /shade ???? boy I know about pulling the annuals ,I just pulled most of the zinnias,i wont pull any more anns till it frosts.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

regarding the swap.... sorry to say, i will not have any Penstemon Purple Pygmy.
I did not get a lot of seeds, and I had 2 folks ask me late Spring... so, poof, that was it. Hopefully next year.

I am pretty sure i had 3 plants... I really need to put them together, maybe in one clump, so i can find it in the Fall. I'm sure that is what happened... just couldn't find them.

I did get a lot of the Red Rocks though.

Hey Tamara -- can you drop me an email... tcs1366@hotmail.com

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Terese,I will get back to you later today.I need to go see if I have seed pods on my magenta pentsamon.I hope i didnt miss them....

Port Norris, NJ(Zone 7b)

hugger,
Most folks here on DG know that some seeds just naturally have a lot of
chaff. Its frustrating to try to sift it out when you know that you'll probably
lose more seed that way.
Don't get too concerned about it.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Tamara

>>How do you clean the trash from the seed, say like zinnia seed ??? I dont mind the trash, someone else might...

As Cris mentioned, most of us do not mind a bit if "stuff" with out seeds...

I have always hated cleaning Zinn seeds... what I did this year, and i've done this with a variety of seeds, especially ones that weigh more than the chaff...

I put it in a shallow bowl, go out side, and blow. sometimes a breezy day helps, just not too windy as that will blow it all away.

but with the zinns -- they have that light [weight-wise] coating around the seeds... they blow off quite easily.

I think I also did this with Agastache/Salvia and Penstemon. within an hour, I had all my seeds cleaned.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks sounds like a winner !!! I tried blowing at them ,blew them all away LOL I was too close !!!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll often blow chaff with a tray underneath the plate or bowl holding the seeds... if I'm too enthusiastic, I can collect up the stuff on the tray and try again. I haven't been able to make it work well for zinnia seeds, but it's just the ticket for basil, penstemmon, and many others... I crush the seed pods, let it all dry for another day or two, sift out the big pieces, then blow off the light chaff that remains.

My dining room table is usually covered in drying seeds this time of year.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

that has been my kitchen counter, and trying to keep the cats away...

Marietta, MS(Zone 7b)

Lightning zapped my satellite dish & I am just now getting back online.

There is not much hope of me getting caught up on all that's been going on, but I've missed you all very much! :)

Hope I haven't missed too much! :) And hope I'm on the right thread... If not, someone please direct me :)

hey Ants... Welcome back. yes this is the most current thread... been a tad slow since the season has wind down... but some of us still post.

What's your kitty lookin' at? anything good in the bucket?

Marietta, MS(Zone 7b)

Thank you tcs :) My kitty (Socks) is getting a drink of rain water. He prefers it to fresh tap water :)

I gathered the last of my moonflower vine seeds. Didn't get many. But I did take a few cuttings just before the frost & they seem to have taken root. Lots of fresh new growth :)

Hoping to get my last few plants planted out tomorrow before the rain comes this weekend.

Found out I have WAY too many houseplants! Going to have to do something about that this spring for sure :)

I hope everyone is doing well.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey ants your kitty sure is cute I keep a pan of water outside for the cats that hang around my momma kitty doesn't go out as much now she's going to be an inside kitty.

We have rain coming in tomorrow so I'm up bright and early for me to get finished outside but know it's not going to happen lol

I had two people coming to work on my windows for the summer one for the woodwork and the other to caulk the windows and of course they wait until the last minute so that is putting a damper on my working outside not fair!

The guy doing my woodwork couldn't get the trim around my windows off just the other day he was going to take them to work to refinish them they are put together too good so that's not going to get done now I have to sand the windows myself and if I had known that I would have done it a long time ago the varnish might not dry good with it starting to get cold I really wanted this done this year my windows sweat so much they are starting to rot and now it looks like I won't get it done until next year with winter so close.

The guy that is suppose to caulk my windows is coming today and here I am trying to get last minute stuff done outside and swamped so he will have to do all the work to get to the windows to caulk them and I'm worried about the caulk drying before it rains tomorrow. I don't have time to be taking the screens out and wanted to clean each window as he went and paint the inside of the window sills. Why do people wait until the last minute to get anything done! One whole side of my house is on a hill so I was planning on this guy helping me on that side now I'll have to beg someone else to help me next year those windows on that side are just filthy! I can't remember the last time mom and dad took the windows apart and cleaned them they are down right embarrassing lol This guy probably won't be here until the afternoon he doesn't get up early so I know he will be caulking tomorrow and the rest of it won't dry because of rain coming in tomorrow around 5. I'm about to have a fit lol

My clay soil has been so hard haven't been able to dig in it all summer with no rain and yesterday it took me forever to dig six holes to put daylilies in thought I was going to brake my shovel and my back at the same time and I can sure feel it this morning lol I still have four baby daylilies to get in the ground today EE bulbs to get out of the pots like about ten of them and probably more plants to get in the ground or transplant into bigger pots that I probably have over looked out there lol

The leaves are thick out there on the ground and still have to go around the neighbor's yards and suck them up with my grass catcher so I can use them for mulch too that's about a four hr. job. if not more anyone else freaking out about this time of year with all the fall chores still ahead with it getting ready to turn cold lol

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Lebug, yes bustin our humps getting gutters cleaned ,putting moth balls in the shed hoping to keep the mice out..Putting away all garden art ,Birdbaths, trimming and raking.Gosh Lebug wish you were closer Id come help you .. I do windows and I can caulk too !! and Iam good at it,your caulk shoud be fine as long as it has a couple of hrs to set up before rain,it will be fine. We are almost ready for winter

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hell I hadn't even thought about the gutters lol Don't get me to thinking of more to do huggergirl lol I could caulk but just haven't got the time and besides I traded an antique bedroom suite for that work plus some doors that I haven't got yet either for the sheds outside but that can wait.

I've been trying to find all the little things for my garden art too mine are so small that they get over looked sometimes until I see them destroyed in the freezing temps lol

It's been so hot out this year that I haven't gotten anything done really and now I'm paying for it, we got to get to bootin and scootin LOL

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Yup,I hear ya,Iam goin to work, sooner I go ,sooner I get home,Iam lucky there I dont punch a time clock...

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Oh my, hearing your list I'm feeling like a slug! All I have to do is mow the lawn, do some dishes, pack for the weekend by 1:00, and maybe rake some leaves before I mow... and I'm overwhelmed (and thus avoiding it all...) ooh, and find a good home for all these extra peppers that we won't be able to eat...

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Freeze those peppers Kelly you'll be glad you did this winter when you're making soup or have you already done that and still have peppers left over lol My peppers didn't do much this year at all, darn weather. I bet I didn't get four good green peppers and the neighbor's was the same way she sure had the tomatoes though!

I'm going to get a garden to going next year if it's the only thing I do all year!!!

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Hello all! trying once again to catch up on all the threads! I have REALLY got to get online more often! Hope everyone is well. I don't have much in the way of seeds - everything got FRIED here ..thankfully we have finally gotten some rain and off the burnbans but now we have had major frosts so everything is pitiful looking..... :( I really hate this time of year when the plants look dead and it is dark by the time I get home!!

Love all the pics of the zinnias and all the other flowers and the butterflies..... beautiful! Looks like some of ya'll really had beautiful gardens!

Hope everyone is well...............

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

I'll freeze some of the bells, though the ones I froze last year didn't get used as much as they should have. What I actually have is 3 large baskets of hot peppers! They're so interesting that I can't resist growing them... but really, how many hot peppers can one use in a year?

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

I didnt realize you could freeze bell peppers..... amazing! I learn something new on dave's all the time!!

NOW, if I could just REMEMBER it all........................................ ^_^
Genna

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

I freeze them whole too..If they might go bad before I ca use them I just throw them in whole, works fine, kind of easy too !!!

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

I really feel dumb but I have thrown away LOTS of bell peppers that I bought and then didn't use and let them ruin. Most of them I use sliced or chopped..... guess I could go ahead and chop and then freeze for later! NEVER even thought about it .... guess I thought they would get mushy! Maybe I won't have to throw away any in the future!

In fact, just last night I used half a bell pepper for a recipe and was wondering if I would get the rest used before it ruined..... now, I can just chop it up and freeze it and see what happens!

Thanks!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

they are not firm after they are defrosted, but the flavor is there.they get soft when cooked anyway.Ive got whole peppers I threw in the freezer 6 weeks ago !!!! when they have yellow or red on sale ,I always throw a few in the freezer.

i'm not a pepper person, but for when i make chili, i use frozen jalapenos, works like a charm.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't care for the 'hot' in peppers that much but veggie soup just doesn't taste the same unless I use japs. in it for some reason.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Morning Lea.. .did you get all that 'stuff' done yesterday?? I"m still trying to get my final 'list' organized. I think I have most the seeds packed ... so tedious, especially since i'm out of those lil baggies... i'm making everything... lots of folding and gluing...

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH... forgot to add... with that chili... you take the jalapenos and just 'split' them. I dont fully cut them in half, just cut them open... then when the chili is ready, you pluck out the peppers -- they are easier to find "whole" and you pluck out the cinn stick and bay leaves. the peppers add just enough flavor but no real "hotness"

Our fave chili, but it's costly as there is a lot of meat in it... plus chili isn't cheap. there was a thread going, not long ago, in the Recipes forum on chili.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

tcs,yum that sounds good, never ran across a recipe that calls for a cinnamon stick, makes sense..ive been trying to cook more with recipes.Loving cooks country mag,30 minit recipes yay,I do love makin poppers though, thats a reg around here

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, I've been busy but wanted to stop in and say Hi :) I don't make Chili much anymore because when I do it can't be 'Real' Chili or what I consider real anyway. My kids think it's too spicy if it has even a touch of heat from peppers, while DH doesn't like the beans.. So now I have to make what I call a kid and husband friendly version, it's no where near as good as the spicy one I used to make. My trick is to use the jalapenos but scrape all the white part and the seeds off, I heard on the food network once that"s where 90% of the heat comes from so then you just get the flavor of the pepper... I dice em up as small as I can so the family won't know they are there. It works out good for me. :)
