We planted 9 siberian carpets this April. Now 5 out of the 9 are brown. The stems are still flexible but the foliage is bronze/brown. They look dead, but are they? I haven't done anything to them yet i.e. cut them down....Any advice would be appreciated.

Pictures of your problem could help. In general when a conifer browns it's not a good thing. Bronzing can sometimes be reversed. Have you checked the plants for spider mites?
I'm a beginner. What does a spider mite look like and how do I check for them?
Mites are tiny insects that are visible (barely), about the size of a grain of salt or smaller. They typically are rust-colored. If you take a yellowing branch and thump it over a white piece of paper it's easier to see them if they're present.
No digital camera, huh?
