Is the Hami melon a hybrid?

Orange, CA(Zone 10b)

I bought one from the store and it was very good so I saved some seeds. I planted some of those seeds and they are now ready to be planted out. It's probably a bit late for planting them out right now but I'm going to give it a try anyway. If I'm lucky enough to get fruits, I'm just wondering if it will be the Hami that I ate or will it be something else.

Should be similar. There are a number of Hami hybrids and unless you bought it at a local shop odds are that it is a hybrid as most commecial growers will use the hybrids. F2 hybrids can vary quite a bit from the original, but most of them will be similar. Even with an OP, cucumis melo cross pollinates readily so unless the grower isolates the varieties, you still get wide variations.

I'm running out of sunny garden spots. May have to plant them in soil bags right on lawn area. I keep telling my DH that the lawn is a waste of gardening space. :-P

Hi Quyen....

I've not heard of a 'Hami' melon before.... is it like a cantaloupe or honeydew ?? ..or something else entirely..??..

I guess there are many varieties of Hami. The one that I ate and saved seeds from had crisp orange flesh, tasted more like cantaloupe than honeydew, and was VERY sweet.

Probably the best comparison is with a Spanish melon like Piel de Sapo. http://www1.chinaculture.org/library/2008-01/08/content_22024.htm In the USA tradeswinds markets an OP version http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/melon_seeds.htm. Evergreen markets hybrid version (Hami Sweet). http://www.evergreenseeds.com/ormelhamswee.html D. Palmer markets a personal size hybrid http://www.dpseeds.com/code/mixed_melon_seeds_hybrid_mini_hami.htm
Chinese companies like Evergrow and All Lucky showcase many varieties.
