Sweet Peas

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

I'm a total newbie to sweet peas :). They are now almost 2metres high :). Anyway my dad mentioned to me that if you cut the flowers it encourages the plant to produce more; is this true or is it an old wives tale? I have been cutting them and bringing them indoors and they are flowering well; I just wondered if it was true or not

Many plants will flower again if you cut the flowers off before they have a chance to set seed--the plant really wants to set seed to reproduce itself, so if you cut the flowers off before it has a chance to, they will put out another round of flowers so that they can take another shot at getting seeds. Not all plants will do that but many of them will (I don't know for sure one way or the other if sweet peas would do that, but it's definitely possible).

I guess so then :). We cut the fuschias we have growing and they flower and flower and flower and flower and flower haha.
