Does anyone have any advice on care or other tips on growing ornamental sweet potato vine in a hanging basket?
ornamental sweet potato vine
They like part to full sun.. and be sure not to let them dry out. These are one of the easiest plants to care for in my opinion.
Yea... everything daisylovin said :)
AND--IF you grow the lime colored one--it makes amazing, large, all kinds of shapes, edible Potatoes underneath....
Don't know if all the other ones do too....Dig and find out in the fall...
I wash them--Nuke them--and gobble them up with some butter....
YUMMMMMMMMMM.......Gita
Lol - I have a ceramic planter that holds about 5 gallons of soil - total. I'd filled it with about 4-1/2 gallons of soil, so the soil level was about an inch below the rim. The soil level is now about 2" ABOVE the rim because those taters are taking up so much room. ;o)
Al
AL, Its good to see you.. I didn't think of a ceramic pot for sweet potatoes...They like water : ) so that is a nice place for them... Not to mention I often follow your lead.
Lol - what's that dance that everyone does at weddings where we all line up with our hands on the hips of the person in front of you - the long line that winds all through the hall .......? That's what I thought of when you said 'follow your lead'. Good to see you, too. ;o)
Its a "Conga Line".
My kids also do that at the skating rink, and often they ALL FALL DOWN..(Hmm... on Wheels) I have to laugh.
I just got 2 of these plants.
One is the lime green. I put it in the ground, so I guess I don't have to worry about soil above the rim of the container..lol.. Hello Al~
Sounds like it's time to harvest them! LOL!!
The other is a dark almost maroon color. That is going in a container. :)
I remember the "Conga Line" on roller skates..lol!
JoJo
Hey JJ. ;o) Good to see you, too!
A friend from CA has sent me sweet potatoes with deep, deep purple flesh. They don't taste much different from the regular ones, but the color is fun to mess around with.
I suppose I should offer a tip, in order that I'm OT. They appreciate a soil that drains well. I fertilize almost all my individual and mixed plantings with Dyna-Gro's Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 fertilizer, but other fertilizers in the 3:1:2 ratio, like MG or Peter's 24-8-16 granular soluble, or MG's 12-4-8 liquid are good choices. Another tip: There is no good reason to use a "bloom-booster" fertilizer for any of your container plantings. Plants use MUCH (6x) more N than P, so supplying all that extra P is/can be harmful and counterproductive. I can elaborate if necessary, but it would be off-topic & I'd need Max's ok - Lol, that is if there is interest.
Al
Al, Are you in this Conga Line or not??? ; )
I think you should be the engine... and we'll have to wait and see who is the Caboose.... lol
Thanks for all the wonderful advice you offer to us...
C'mon - everybody now ...... cha cha cha cha cha CHA - cha cha cha cha cha CHA - Max is gon na kill US - for straying so far O T! Lol
Al
ROFL!!
Cha, Cha, Cha,.... Now i'm feeling old thinking about the roller skating days...lol..
Al~ Thanks for the extra tips. :). saves me/us from yelling for help later..lol..
I'll be using your mix (5-1-1).. have MG liq. and have never bought a "bloom-booster" .. and from the looks of things , wont. ;)
Do have questions..
I have a terra cotta that is painted with something black on the inside. Is this going to breathe or would it act more like ceramic?? I just got it.. almost didn't because of the lining.. please dont tell me I wasted my $$..lol...
The one I put in the ground had long roots, but was also a little root bound.
Should they go in a deep pot?
From the little i've looked up.. the dark colored one doesn't get the tubers.? or am I wrong??
Now to figure out what will go in the container with them..:)
I am going to try one in full sun (the maroon one) and the other in part shade as a ground cover.
JJ..
It doesn't sound like it'll breath very well, but that's not the end of the world - especially where you live. Well, I take that back - gas-permeable pots do help keep soil temps down, but they also require more frequent watering. You don't get nothin for nothin.
I don't think the depth of the pot is as important as the volume. If you have a gallon of well-aerated soil in a tall thin pot, things will grow as well as they would in a shallow pot, but you would be watering less in the deep pot. If the soil is heavy - then the deep pot is a better choice.
I can't tell you about the tubers w/o looking it up. I usually pitch the plantings they're in on the compost pile where they freeze over winter - never bothered to look.
YPA
lol, C'mon and Cha Cha Cha CHA!!! Max will probably just want to join in... : )
Good Morning,
I may try and sand the worst of the black paint off the pot. I'd rather have happy plants and don't mind the extra watering. For some reason alot of terra cotta made in the states has this lining.
If Mike finds out they grow something similar to sweet potato he'll be out there digging up my plants. LOL!
Thanks :)
JJ
