I work full time and can only manage to water a couple of times a week so I think not, when I watered yesterday I could hear the water going straight through the pot which to me would indicate the pot is actually is dry, no?

Either dry or very rootbound. I have one that has been in a hanging basket for three years and it is so rootbound that I have to water it every other day.
