Help need good weed barrier!

Shirley, IN

I have a rather large rock garden that is on a hill, my son and husband made this f or me while I was ill , it is beautiful but they didn,t know to put something down to control weeds it has been a real chore for me to weed . Can anyone give me some advice on what is good to use to control weeds. My husband and son are going to redue it for me this fall. Thamks Tammy

Preen might be a better way to reduce weeds than any weed barrier cloth, which is great for paths but not so great for a rock garden.

Remove all weeds, sprinkle on the Preen, rake it in very lightly and then you must water it in for the Preen to release the gas that kills all seedlings, good and bad. So if you have a plant and want all the seedlings Preen would not be the answer.

If you have good space between your plants you can put down newspaper ...wet it and then mulch it over. I don't think there is anything that will over the long haul work..it probably needs to be touched up every year but this would take care of the majority plus the use of the weed killer as pirl said.

pirl, I had this thread open in another window and didn't get around to responding until much later. :-)

I love Preen but I also let very few plants self-seed and if something's got to give it may as well be a few self-seeded plants and not my back from continually weeding 30 gardens.

pirl, you are right. I don't use it where I am hoping to have desirable self-seeders. I have a very rough spot with a low growing juniper groundcover and Preen is perfect for it.
Another note on Preen. You need to use it year round. Many weeds sprout at different times even in the winter.
I try to apply mine about every 5 weeks.

You're more diligent than I. Generally I only have to use it in one garden and try to do it every two months.

Most of my beds are weed free because it is lasagna. There is a long thread about lasagna gardening. It is too long to start again. Belle

I don't think a rock garden would lend itself to lasagna bedding very well would it? I may be wrong. ???

is preen harmful to pets ?

I don't know. My dog has no interest in it but I would suggest you Google it or read the label.
