Growing Daylilies in Four Corners Area

Deland, FL & Hot Spr, AR

I have a friend I met in the four corners area, specifically, Cortez, CO, who would like to know about growing daylilies in this area. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What zone are they in?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Looking at the zone map for that corner of CO, it looks like it goes from zone 6 to zone 5 to zone 4 and even a few pockets of zone 3 over a very small distance (I'm guessing the quick changes are due to elevation differences) http://davesgarden.com/zone/show/mile_high So it's going to be critical to figure out exactly which zone your friend is in before someone could give her advice. In zone 5 & 6 there should be at least some daylilies that can grow, zone 4 I'm not sure but if there are ones that could grow her choices are probably going to be more limited. Once you've figured out her zone, you might post in the daylily forum for advice--I'm sure the folks there would know which ones would work for her.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

Zone 4 is also in Wisconsin and parts of Illinois. If your friend is in that zone, she should probably look for the dormant type or, semi-evergreen types. She should try to purchase plants from northern growers. Since you are a subscriber to DG, post your question on the Daylily forum, you will gets lots of help there.

Thanks all. This area is very interesting. We visited a winery and the lady there said that the first vineyard they planted froze, but people further north supply them with grapes that will grow in the area and they are only a few miles away.
