Solar powered electric fence > any experience to share.??

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

I've been researching ideas on how to keep the critters out of my garden. I live on 10 acres...close to a 'green belt' that is protected FOR the wildlife...so lots of critters in these-here-parts. I had this HUGE tomato that I was just waiting to turn red and ripen on the vine... thought I'd give it just a couple / few more days...and the next day some critter got to it and ate half of it. ugh! So that did it.

I've found a couple of websites for 'solar powered fencing' ....

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these two examples....or any other kind...??...

Many thanks...

Don't know about these two brands in particular, but we've had good service from one for several years now.

Hi Tar...

Did you go with a single wire type or one of the 'netting' types..??.. How's the maintenance..??..

Before we built, we kept horses on the property and contained them on one side of the pasture with a three wire fence (about 50 yards of fence - 3/8" braided nylon with conductive copper threads), middle and top wires hot, bottom one grounded. The animals were quick studies, the first few days we had it up I saw each of them touch it once. Never saw one touch it again.

At first we had all three hot, but our Aussie got stung brushing under the bottom line, then she turned around and bit the wire. It got her, and for the next several times we were there tending the animals, she wouldn't get out of the Jeep. She got over it before long.

Only maintenance was to occasionally check the water in the deep cycle battery.

as far as my garden spot goes it's enclosed with chicken wire like a batting cage. not too sexy but an electric fence gets tunneled under and stuff like bird netting just gets chewed through by the ground squirrels here.

we use one here whenever we need to keep the horses out of the pasture for whatever reason (flood irrigation, stall cleaning/painting, etc) and it does the job. horses have good memories and none of them have tested it's effectiveness more than once. in our case we just use a single braided line about 3 feet high which gives the one stupid dog (too dumb to figure out the fence shocks him) enough clearance to go under so he can nip at the horses hind legs until they kick him. if dogs had some kind of smarty pants club he would not be a member.

I used a solar electric fence unit for a single wire fence for cattle. It worked well for maybe five years, then I suspect the battery needed replacing.
