I planted a mix packet from Burpee and when the first ones bloomed they were beautiful bi-colored with rust colored petals fading to buttery yellow. Fast forward a week or so and all the other ones are blooming. Now the first ones are all droopy. Like everything looks fine on the plant except the head tilts down. Any idea why???
Droopy sunflower
Thanks ladies. Glad to hear I am not doing something wrong. It is a bummer though. They just don't look as cheerful that way.
Right - not as cheerful. If they had to advertise the truth they'd show them in all stages, not just when they look their best.
I let my grandkids plant sunflowers this year and my granddaughter was so sad when she came by for her weekly check and saw some of them like that. She was so upset and thought they were going to die. It made for a good "learning moment" though.
there are new varieties out there that don,t have such large centers for seeds to develop. wild parrots devastate mine b4 they droop
My brother, in Sarasota, FL, had problems with wild parrots landing on his Sunflowers. They were even landing on the Sunflowers that hadn't opened, and their weight was snapping them stems. I told him to remove the Sunflowers immediately after the blooms fade and not let them go to seed. He can't collect any seeds, but the parrots are no longer a problem.
