WEEDS IN STRAWBERRY BED

Clifton Hill, MO

Is there anything I can safely use to broadcast in my strawberry bed without killing the strawberries? It has been so wet here this year they have just about overtaken my bed. Crabgrass is the worst, the other I just pull out when it gets big enough to get ahold of. Thanks!

Not really an answer to your question, but that's the problem I've had with growing strawberries, as well as asparagus and perennial flowers, in the past. I would suggest preparing a new bed for a couple of years to make it as weed-free as possible, then planting the strawberries there. Now, being much older and wiser (lol) I would *never* plant a perennial of any type without giving that area at least 2-3 years of preparation. Hard to do when you're impatient to get whatever it is you want to grow, though!

If the weeds are all grasses, then there are grass & crabgrass killers you can buy that will kill the grasses but not other sorts of plants. I'm not sure if they're safe for use on things you're going to eat though so you might want to do a little research on that if the strawberries are close to getting ripe. But if you also have broadleaf weeds then you'll have to either hand pull or else go around and be very careful to apply herbicide just to the weeds and not the strawberries.
