My zinnias were doing beautifully, 3' tall with dense foilage and lots of flowers. Several days of flooding rains followed by our high Houston temperatures caused the plants to fall over, and most of the bottom leaves are brown. The leaves at the very top of the plants are still green with some flowers. Should I cut the plant off near the ground and hope for new growth or just give up and pull up by the roots?
Zinnias...Doomed?
High winds ruined some of mine last year but I left them so the flowers could drop seeds before I pulled them out. This year I have a gorgeous crop of them and I didn't have to do any work to get them (except for a little thinning because they came up so thick).
Thanks NatureLover! I do hate to remove any flowering plant that's still doing it's best to survive. They look awful now but I'll be glad I left them when next year when those seeds give me a new crop.
I understand froglady. We work so hard to have pretty flowerbeds and it's just pure torture for us to tear them out before they've even finished blooming :-{ I hope you get a gorgeous bunch of new zinnias next year like I got this year. I let all my flowers self seed. Even if I don't need them, I can always find several friends to share them with :-}
