Embarrassing Problem

Long Beach, NY

Hi everyone! I need some advice. Yesterday I caught my husband urinating in my flower beds. The area effected was where I have portulacas growing nicely. He swears he never did this before but he likes to be outside barbequing all the time and I'm just not sure. Should I put something like lime down in that area? I haven't tested the soil's PH yet because I really don't want to handle it right now. Any suggestions would be helpful, Thank you.

i would just put water on the spot, it should not kill your plants.Urine has urea and nitugen which is good for plants. LOL!!! Poor thing he got caught!!!Belle

As long as it really was a one time thing (or if he does it in different parts of the garden when he does it) it won't kill your plants. But if he makes a habit of over and over again going in the same spot then you could have problems. The biggest problem isn't the pH, it's the high nitrogen content which can burn plants if they get too much of it (just like fertilizer burn)

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling he has done this before and I'm a little worried he may have used the containers that I'm growing my tomatos, peppers and eggplants in. If he did is it bad to eat any of my veggies?

That is a good method to extrminate clumping grass. A few treatments and the grass turns crispy.

Wildcat do you mean that to get rid of clumping grass I should have him....go on it? Would it work like "Roundup"? Because I hate to use poisons and we get clumps of weeds coming up through cracks in paved places.

IT takes more than one treatment, but it does ends up looking like round up did it.

I can take a photo of the end result. Taking a photo never entered my mind before.

It will at least keep the deer out of your yard

I tried to keep my sense of humor about it. When I caught him I said urine trouble mister! Thanks for the help everybody!

Roundup isn't a poison.

How does it kill the weeds so fast if it isn't a poison?

If this were my husband, I'd hand him a coffee can whenever he goes out to barbecue, and tell him to rinse it out when he's done.

Long Beach, NY

Maybe I'll give him a coffe can, tell him to put the contents in a spray bottle and use it like "Roundup"?

Roundup just stops plant from photosynthesizing, I think. If it were poison I don't think so many weeds would return from seed in the same spot where RU has been sprayed.

I guess it depends on how you define poison, but I would say it is...it's a contact herbicide that kills vegetation that it comes in contact with. It does not inhibit seed germination--it takes a different sort of chemical to do that.

ecrane, I think you are right. I googled glyphosate and it is indeed a poison. I just never thought of it that way because it biodegrades in the ground and doesn't damage the soil. Not that I've ever noticed anyway and I've been using it religiously for 25 years at least.

LOL, I live in a very *private* area and DH tends to pee off the deck at night when he lets the dogs out... At first I was sure he was going to kill the grass by doing so, but turned out the grass there is quite lush and happy. And urine is normally sterile, so I wouldn't worry about it, let the poor guy do his thing!l

;-}
