Crabgrass
You need to use crabgrass preventive, gets puts down in spring when soil is still cool

Are you talking about the crabgrass being the lawn or the weed?

Crabgrass can't kill a lawn. A good lawn kills crabgrass.

Crabgrass is the pits --- but (this will sound crazy) it grows on the gravel drive and I absolutely love pulling it up. It comes up so cleanly --roots and all. No breaking off. Since it is there anyway --- I am glad there is something positive about it. It is sort of satisfying the way it pulls up.

Flowerjen is right they are crabgras and since it is too late to put down crabgrass control just mow it low so they do not flower. they do not kill grass as she said. Our lawn is weed free but DH has a regimen he does during spring and early summer.

this is the backyard.

One good thing to do is oversow good grass seed every spring and fall. Especially if a good long rain is predicted. A thick lawn of the kind of grass you want won't leave room for crabgrass to sprout in the first place. I have found crabgrass preventers to be effective. But crabgrass killers are overall ineffective and can kill good grass too if conditions aren't perfect. And they will NOT kill dallisgrass as stated on the label. It may look dead but it will recover in time. I prize up dallisgrass with a weeder by hand. It's worth it not to see those disgusting dallisgrass seedheads everywhere. They almost make my skin crawl.
Crabgrass can never be completely eliminated. At least not here on my property but you can slow it down and make it scarce. The thing is no matter what you do people and animals will bring the seeds in with them on their feet. Along with all kinds of other weeds.
But I believe the biggest part of gardening is devoted to weed control. I mean that's the definition of gardening when you think about it. We'll always have weeds no matter what.

One would think that my gravel drive would be downright unfriendly --- at least as unfriendly as a thick lush healthy competitive lawn -- no water.... no nutrients.... hot as hell with the heat absorbed by the rock and reflecting --and yet the crabgrass grows and has wonderful healthy appearing roots.

I have a gravel pathway with weedblocker underneath, and the crabgrass likes to grow between the stones. The funny part is, when you pull the grass, the roots are grabbing on nothing but fine marble-chip-dust, not even penetrating the weedblocker fabric. In essence, it can grow well in nothing but crushed marble chips.
