newbie with question regarding Bachelor's Buttons.

Hi all, new to the forum and to a garden at a new house. Still trying to figure it all out. Anyway, i have what i have been told is Bachelor's Buttons that bloomed back in may. From what i have been reading, it is considered an annual, but can "re-seed" itself in the ground almost acting like a perrenial.
My question is, after it blooms, it just looks like a big ratty weed, so i am not sure if i should cut it back to the ground, cut just the dead blooms off or what to do with it.
I am also not really sure if it really will come back next year, or what to expect from it. I did notice under all the dried out stalks and leaves, there is green growth, which i believe is new growth that has been shielded from the sun.
any info on this flower is greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Yes, Bachelor buttons are good at reseeding, but you do need to let the seed heads ripen and turn brown. Then you can harvest the tops and cut the rest of the plant back. If you see new growth on the bottom, the plant may, or may not, make it through the winter and come back next year. Sow the seeds in the fall, just scatter them through the garden, on bare ground, and look for seedlings next spring.

thanks so much.
i was not familiar with this flower at all, so i wasn't quite sure what to expect or what to do with it. It had overtaken part of the garden, and was all dried and dead looking. I cut it back and see lots of new growth underneath. Hopefully it will come back next year, the flowers are very pretty, will just have to keep it tamed a bit more!
