What's going on with my trees?

North Reading, MA(Zone 6b)

We have several trees in our yard that have some "green stuff" growing on them. I know some of it is moss but I'm not sure what the lighter green stuff is (our "bug guy" said he's seen it before and it can be treated but he doesn't recall what/how).

(Is this the right place to post a question of this sort?)

The graying green and yellowish green are lichens..normal, no problem. The dark green may also be but the photo is too blurred to tell. It could also be a moss?? can you get a better pic if that is what you are talking about??

Thanks, Deb. I'll check out lichens (we've lived in the house almost 3 years and its been there and nothings ever happened so I was hoping it would be okay). I'm pretty sure the other is moss (will that harm the tree???) That's the only photo I have that has the darker green on it.

Nope, the moss won't hurt it either. Actually, I kindof like the variations it gives to bark!

Thanks for your help, Debbie! I'm so thrilled that these trees are going to be okay!

I dragged an old bench out that's been sitting in the shade for years. It was covered with lichens. I wish I had taken a picture, it was so pretty with all the different, bright shades of green. Unfortunately I had to wire brush the lichens off when I brought it into the sun so I could use it again. The lichens didn't hurt the wood at all. Nothing was rotten. I would love to try to paint it to look like it had lichens growing on it. There's a technique for giving pots and wood a verde finish using 6 different colors. If I change the palette to shades of greens it just may work. I may try it.

mcbc glad you asked, I butchered about Two trees and three shrubs trying to cut that stuff out before I found out it was harmless LOL
