lilium

Honea Path, SC

i bought a bunch of plants in the spring and planted most of them. i have some lilium left to plant, so at this point in the summer i'm waiting until fall to do it. i water them everyday and they get good sun. today i looked at them and they had small bulbous things at the base of each plant. i don't know what they are. i picked a couple off and one had a root-like string attached. should i pick them all off and maybe plant some, leave them where they are, or pick 'em and ditch 'em??? thank you much in advance!

They are tiny bulbs. Plant them about a 1/2 inch deep and keep them watered.

I asume you have planted the Lilium bulbs in a pot with some compost or soil, they will die off otherwise, even just planting them in the garden anywhere will help them survive. The stuff you are pulling off the bulbs at the roots are new bulb-lets and will take anything from one to 4 years before reaching flowering size, Lily bulbs, like all other bulbs are like the food store for the plant to survive, once you plant the bulb, it starts to grow roots to allow the uptake of moisture and food from the soil, after flowering, you let the foliage die down naturally as this helps feed and nourish the bulb, it stores this in the bulb, so it has built up a food storage for the following years flowers, it also helps keep the bulbs healthy and produce new little bulb lets as you have already noticed your bulbs are doing for you now.
Good luck. WeeNel.
