Bugs in the Iris Root & Naming a day lily I just got

Poughkeepsie - Hyde , NY(Zone 4a)

Hi All...

I hope you folks can help....

I have some bugs, worms in the root of an Iris I want to save. What should I do and use?

It is digging holes in the root and of course the leaves are dying.

I never had much luck with Iris but they are nice and I really don't want to loose the ones I have. They are very expensive, and again I want to save this.

AND

I aquired a day lily recently. I have searched the net for a picture and name, no luck. My camera is not working, and the flowers are all but gone now so I can not post one. The day lily is yellow / gold, and has 6 leaves to the flower, 3 flower leaves have tips that are burgendy to brown color,,, but only on the tip.

Any clues as to what it is called? and any one have a picture?

Thanks so much.

ok sounds like you have an iris borer. you can get some insecticides for it. remeber always only plant the actual roots of the iris. the rhizome stays above ground. but look it up on web all kinds of control measures.

it can really be a big thing to id a daylily without a pic as so many are the same color or close. some daylilies get sold without names because people hate to throw them away.

I think you might have Iris borers. Do they look like this?

If so, here is an article on what to do. http://www.ehow.com/how_5080382_cure-borer-save-iris-plants.html

As to the name of the Daylily, that would be next to impossible without a picture.

Thanks folks... it is a borer for sure. Don't know where it came from.

What should I put on the roots to kill the darn thing?

I will try to get a picture. It is a cute little flower.

Again thanks.

Looks like everyone else has explained the iris borer and solutions to you, but here is a story that might ease your mind about the prognosis for survival.

I had a patch of irises that got borer AND some rot every year but I didn't know what it was - I just thought the leaves browning and the rhizomes getting icky was normal for irises (those problems are so common I guess I was halfway right!). Still, for about 4 years of me totally ignoring the problems, the patch kept growing and every spring they'd come back loaded with gorgeous blooms. I finally had to dig them all up this spring to properly divide them and get them under control. So try not to worry too much - if my experience is any indication, your irises will be just fine next spring. :)

I found the bug.... BUG it was like a mini snake!.... I have never seen such a thing. I dug all the iris and searched each. Rooted out the "snake", cut it in half and tossed it in the trash. Then soaked the infected iris in bleach water, left them out to see if anything moved or came out of the iris root and will replant after a period in the frig, I hope will kill off anything left.

Thanks all.

As for the day lily, no more blooms so I will have to wait till next year.

Also noted that some day lily do not have centers for seeding, what a drag.

Again Thanks
