How to Install a Bed . . . HELP PLEASE!!

Huntersville, NC

Hello!

I want to have all my Hostas centrally located in one shade bed to increase survival in all this NC heat.
It is easier to generously water one bed than try to generously water our entire yard. (Yes I know, we need irrigation.)

Ive selected the perfect spot 8'x 12' and have a nice collection of hostas, ferns and heucheras. The area has been well tilled and 10 additional bags of soil are here too (2cu ft). We have the mulch that is over the rest of the yard also. I just don't want to soil to run off in a hard rain storm.

So would the cedar mulch prevent the soil erosion or should I also install some landscape edging?
Or is there another way or material that could help.

I just want to do this correctly so I won't have to do it again.

Thank you for any and all suggestions.

BTW - Do I need more soil?? There is already 1'+ in the original tilled bed - not great quality but has been amended & mulched regularly over the years. There would be another foot with the bagged soil I've purchased thus far.

I will try to get a picture.

Is the bed flat? Mulched the soil should not go anywhere in the rain.

Bring some of that rain here - we need it!

You need a fence for those hosta because it is a buffet for the deer. Astilbe will do well in the shade and deer won't eat.

I don't think you need more soil --whenever you need garden mulch / compost - check out your landfill. It is less expensive than buying bagged and it is generally really good quality too.

It is really amazing how mulch of any kind will stop the wash. I just use pine straw and it works wonders. (We could use some rain here too. :-) Sounds like you have really prepared well and the bed should be filled with healthy plants soon.
