My zucchini plant is huge and producing a lot, but I noticed its thick stem had "shavings" under it on ground. I looked closer and saw something had eaten into the stem just above the ground, and it was all mushy-looking, with a hole. I checked advice on internet, grabbed my paring knife and cut a slit into the stem, elongating the hole. Sure enough, there was a squash borer grub/worm eating away. I extracted and squished the squash borer. There was considerable damage with a wide hole eaten through both sides and very little left on the outside edges of root. Following advice, because the plant did not look wilted or dying yet, I heaped up good earth around the stem (buried it) and watered, hoping to save it and get more roots growing. We'll see. I also found another squash borer just starting to eat thru outside of another root. The bug that lays these borer worm eggs looks like a cross between a bee and a lightening bug. It is orange and black. Bad bug! Bad Bug!
