THE WOOLEY ADELGID

Clyde, NC

WE JUST CUT DOWN ONE OF OUR HEMLOCK TREES AND NOTICED THAT IT IS INFESTED WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE THE WOOLEY ADELGID THAT HAS BEEN KILLING THE HEMLOCKS ALL THROUGH THE SMOKEY MOUNTAINS. SINCE WE ALSO HAVE FRASIER FIR TREES IN OUR YARD, I'M WONDERING IF THEY WILL BE ATTACKED NEXT.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER THE FIRS ARE A FAVORITE FOOD OF THE WOOLEY ADELGID?

Ok 1st off please stop yelling :) - the all caps are an indication of yelling

Info from PA dept of Forestry
Several species of hemlock serve as a host for this insect. The winged, non-feeding, female adults may utilize spruce as an alternate host.

Here's a great info pack from Penn State

Looks like Spruces are the secondary host

FIRST OF ALL THIS IS THE FIRST I HAVE EVER HEARD OF THE USE OF CAPITOLS AS YELLING. I THOUGHT DAVESGARDEN WAS A FORUM USED TO DISCUSS GARDENING. I GUESS WE HAVE MOVED TO
COMPUTER ETIQUETTE. HOW IGNORANT.

Actually the thing about not typing in all caps is addressed in the DG FAQ--it is something that is not encouraged: http://davesgarden.com/faq/forums/#130

I am so sorry for the "yelling" I have bad eyesight, and the caps makes it easier for me to see what I'm saying. LOL

Seriously tho, I didn't realize.

Yesterday was not (underline) my day.

Thank you for your advice. I will check the link.

I've seen other people posting in caps for the same reason...but unfortunately it can get interpreted as shouting if people don't realize why you're doing it. So if it makes it easier for you, there's no reason you couldn't continue to do it as long as you're aware of how people may interpret it. DG's a pretty friendly site, so if you do get comments about shouting just explain why and I'm sure people will understand!

Most browsers (like Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) have a way to increase the size of the screen and/or the text. On IE, you click on the "page" button in the near-upper right corner, then choose zoom or text size. It can really help for those of us who can't read the fine print :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I do have the magnifier option on my IE.
I forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder. I'm using it right now.
Funny, tho, I remember to use it when I read small text, but not when I write.

:o)
Hey, call it a senior moment.
