dying baby blueberry bush.

Lancaster, CA

planted a small blueberry bush a couple months ago. it hasn't grown at all and the leaves are turning brown no matter how much water i give it. it is right next to a raspberry bush i planted at the same time and the raspberry bush is growing well. i don't know what is wrong. any advice? I live in a southwest desert climate, the plant is in full sun and i added some compost topsoil to the hard dirt.

I had a hard time with my blueberries, too. They like cooler weather so I'm not sure how they'll do in your climate right now. Have you checked the soil to make sure that it's acidic enough?

Blueberries like LOTS of organic matter, as well as acid soil. Did you loosen the root ball? If the plant was root bound when you purchased it, and the roots are not unwound the plant will strangle itself. If you can, I would dig up the plant, amend the soil with lots of organic matter ( I used peat moss because it is acidic) and loosen the root ball before you replant. Good luck!

Two things:

They like it super acidic. But I have found that if it isn't acidic enough, it just won't fruit much.
Mine turn brown not because of the heat, but because of the sun. I know this because I have 4 plants all lined up in a row, and the one on the end gets shade from a tree in the heat of the afternoon. It is in GREAT shape. The other three are exposed to full sun, and are all really suffering.

I've just built a sun screen for them (photo to follow when I get home).

Hoping it will bring 'em back to life!
