I went to meet the postman today..looked own and my rose bush ( which as the beetle mainly) had 4 unopened buds that was engulfed with beetles again....I mean 6 and 7 on top of each other waiting to get to the rose,,,I put a bag over the whole area and snipped it off,,,,close to 75 i'd say...i was so gross.....I've never seen this before,,,,

Check out 'thrips' and see if that's your bug. Are you sure they are eating the flowers and not eating aphids? There are some things that look like they're the bad guy but are the good guys.

nope,,,these were beetles.....gross beetles................I dont know why i have them cuz i used that milky spore (sp) on the small patch of front lawn in the spring.....

For me, reading this post and the replies was hilarious. Here in the south, japanese beetles (which is what I'm betting you have) are something that we all learn to loathe at a young age. Luckily, Bayer makes a product called "All-in-One Rose Care" that you can put on the soil around each rose once per month that takes care of the beetles and most diseases. If you don't have disease problems on your roses you can use the "Tree and Shrub Insect Control" instead. You only have to apply it once per year!

And as far as the Milky Spore goes, it's a great product but it only kills the larvae in your yard. It can't control the beetles that fly in from everyone else's yard.

But, before we go any further... can you post a picture so we can be sure this is your problem.

Also milky spore takes years to totally take effect

Is this the beetle?
This is a Japanese Beetle, just knock them off into a pail of soapy water...I carry around an empty laundry detergent bottle, put some water in it shake it up since it already has soap in it I'm good to go.

that's the pest right there! but my question is ...why would I have 50-60 of them on an unopened rose bud? Never seen that before....................

They like to congregate. When one beetle finds a good spot he sends out pheromones and calls all his friends. Then it's like a roman orgy on your rose bush.

Well he needs to find a ne coffee shop to hang out at!!

We've had hundreds of Japanese beetles, last year and this year. They love roses and most other plants. They'll quickly devour the leaves and rosebuds.
I've got the bucket of soapy water and just pick them off, several times a day. If you put the bucket underneath them while trying to pick them off, many will try dropping to the ground and land in the bucket instead!
I think I'm having fairly good results, because I'm not seeing near as many as 3 weeks ago.

Saw my first Japanese beetle about 3 weeks ago. Started knocking them off into soapy water, and they seemed to go away. Thought this year would be easy, but now they have returned with a vengence! I go out several times a day and knock them off the roses and other plants. My hibiscus is starting the bloom, and they love those flowers. Will look for that All in One Rose Care - sounds like a great product!

Y'all have Japanese Beetles that far north? Is that normal? I saw them lots in the Carolinas, but haven't seen much of any in VA. I always thought it was because we are far enough north.

They can live way farther north than Virginia--I grew up in northern Ohio and they were always on my mom's roses every year.

I do enjoy learning something new! :)
