I read in catalogs and online that it will grow in zones 9 and 10. However, my area is generally very dry (little or no humidity) and although I have a drip system in place, the temps reach in the 100's (today 104..). My garden/yard faces south. Is there any way that I could get one of these trees to grow here?
Averrhoa carambola, will it grow in zone 9b (Phnx, AZ)?
I've seen it produce in upcountry areas of Hawai'i. It is certainly worth a try if you can give it protection from wind.
In Phoenix you will probably need to water it regularly.
@ Metrosideros: Thanks! I'm gonna give it a try..! I'm prepping the soil now (because it's mostly clay...) ....I'll keep you posted...
Great! What cultivar are you going to grow?
The Sri Kembangan.....I believe that's a Thai variety .....no?
I have that one! Yes, it's a Thai variety. It makes larger sweeter fruit than other varieties.
