drip irrigation system

Brooklyn, NY

i jerry rigged a drip irrigation system with some tubing and an aqaurium pump. my question is i run it for 20 minutes which gives each tomato plant 1 cup of water at 8am every day. the plants look ok but im wondering if this is enough water for these plants.

I think you need more than that. l gal per plant would be better, but 3 gal. would be better per day. If you add fertilizer, you'll be fruiting pretty good. However, I am from Texas, but I water even more then that.

With decent soil and surface mulch, a cup a day might be enough in your climate, but the plants and soil will tell you how much is enough. One morning just before the dripper comes on, check the soil about 8 inches down. If it's damp, you're good - if not, go up to 1 1/2 cups for a few days and check again. If it's soggy wet, back off a little. As the plants grow and have more foliage, they'll likely need more water.

What kinds of plants?.

tomatos and watermelons.
wow a gallon sound like ALOT of water. i always thought slightly drier soil produces better fruit but i dont really know.
