I planted several Hyacinth bean vines seeds this spring and they were doing great. Then something started eating holes in the leaves. I have not seen any Japanese beetles, slugs or snails. Does anyone know what could be eating the leaves? I leave in middle Tennessee.

Bean vines are so pretty when they bloom. It might be some bug that comes out at night. Go out in the evening with a flash light and see if you can see the critter. Here's a website that shows the damage some insects will do to plants. See if you recognize your leaf damage. The page lands on Earwigs, but you can select other insects.

It might possibly be Katydids. I had 1 katydid live in my Hyacinth bean vine this past summer. Since it was just him, I just let it live there as it didn't cause hardly any damage. It would hide in the daytime and I would see it every night. He became my friend. :) I also have to check my rosebuds at night because they tend to eat holes in them. It took me 3 years to figure that one out! Sneaky little buggers!!!
Poss what we call earwigs, they are small brown beetles with the pincers at the rear, they love to nibble Rose, Dahlias, and other plants in the evening, they hide in leaf creases or under canes etc, best way to find out would be to lay a sheet of paper down and give the plants a firm shake holding onto the flower head for safety, any bugs that drop off will be on the paper but, be quick as earwigs can scat off at million miles an hour ha, ha, ha.
By the way another way to trap is to place onto a garden cane, an upturned small plant pot filled with shredded newspaper, the bugs go hide in this for their daytime sleep and you get a chance to find the trouble and deal with it by whatever way you choose, for earwigs I choose a bucket of hot water as they really are destructive to the plants but on the up side, they also eat greenfly on the Roses and other plants. who said gardening was no problem, ha, ha, ha.
Good luck. WeeNel.
