I just inherited a 10 x 10 plot in our community garden that had been abandoned. I have some fava bean seeds, can I plant these now and get a harvest before fall? The packet says they take 100 days, which is a little past our frost date, but they are supposedly cold tolerant.
can I plant favas now in zone 5?
You can try it and see. I don't know how big your harvest would be since they are a cool weather plant.
I plant mine just after peas and they are podding right now...
There are other things you could plant now that would give you a bigger harvest. Bush beans, cukes, broccoli, any fall vegetable...
Thanks - I am going to try 4 fava plants as an experiment, and I also planted three types of bush beans, cukes, a short day cantaloupe (crossing fingers on that one), and some yellow squash. I'm starting romanesco broc + cabbage from seed.
Sounds great! I think you have a good plan.
Most folks plant those crops only once, without realizing they will give you good produce into fall with multiple plantings.
Let us know how you make out.
Just wanted to leave an update... I only got a few, and then they froze. It was worth a try!
