Hi all. Do columbines planted in part sun/part shade fade away in summer the way that bleeding hearts do? Trying to figure out whether I should plant fall perennials like asters near them
Columbines - Do They Fade Away in Summer?
Mine tend to look pretty rough by this time of year, but they're established to the point where they reseed like crazy and I always have new little ones coming up. I just cut the ugly foliage down to the ground when I can't stand looking at it anymore (especially anything that has evidence of leaf miners hiding inside), and let the basal foliage emerge and the other nearby seedlings take over. I think your idea to combine the columbine with fall-blooming perennials is a great one, though. Even if your columbine's foliage still looks good, it will be nice to have something blooming.
They don't look so good this time of year, but if you cut them back you'll get some new growth. At least they'll be green.
