How much is too much?

Bethlehem, PA

One year after moving from the BIG city to beautiful Bethlehem, Pa, my back yard- a veritable wasteland of dust and clay and used unmentionable person products -has become a garden fairyland..
The Gods must have been with me because I haven't a clue what I am doing.
My question is about watering.
I tend to water like crazy..
The (tested) soil is now yummy and deep and full of huge worms.
No matter how much I water there is never any 'standing'..
Whatever I stick in the ground grows and thrives.
But of course someone gave me the heebe-jeebies about watering too much, and now I am pertwitzed.
There are a couple of things that need less water, Iris and Russian sage and sedums, for instance, which are doing splendidly.
And I do not have anything that is uncommon or picky, I think, and no annuals or roses..
So what would be the signs that I am overwatering?
Is it possible that one morning I will wake up and everything will be rotted and dead?
This seems to be so intuitive, but MY intuition has taken a cab to the airport..

If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

One sure sign that you're over watering can be yellowing foliage. Hard to advise you beyond that since we don't know excatly what you're growing...but as was stated above, it if ain't broke, don't fix it !

Stick you finger into the soil before you water a bed. If it feels wet, then you don't need to water that day. It sounds like you're doing ok though. If your plants start to yellow, then you'll know they have too much water, and back off for a day. We're getting too much rain here and other parts of the country are in a heat wave, and dry as a bone. I've only had to water twice this summer here, but conditions in your area are different. As long as your gardens look happy, I wouldn't worry about it.

A round-about way of saying just what they said above.
