Are my cucumbers and green beans in trouble?

Franklin, MA

Hello! I am a first time gardener and looking for some help. A little about my plants : I live in a condo and am trying to grow in containers. My plants get morning sun and have been doing very well. The cucumbers were grown from small plants and the beans from seeds. I live in Massachusetts.

This week I am on vacation in New Hampshire and took the plants with me because I had nobody to water them at home. The leaves on both plants are starting to dry up and shrivel. On the cucumbers there are some holes on a few leaves. It has also been very windy here and some of the cucumber stems have broken and are hanging down.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! Sorry if I am not using the correct gardening lingo but I am new to this!!! Thanks in advance!

Wow, you are very dedicated...taking your plants on vacation! :-)

Wish I could help, but I don't grow anything in containers. One thing about the shriveling, are they getting enough water...too much water. Sometimes the outcome for over watering looks the same as under watering. I don't know if this could be part of the problem, but just a thought.

Good luck

Assume you are in a warmer climate? If so, bring your plants out in the mornings and morning sun. Then take them in around 2 before the hottest part of the day occurs. Change in climate, intensity of sun, etc. requires hardening just like transplants. Over watering will wash out nutrients and stress the plants. Before watering, stick your fingers into the soil to see if it is damp. Don't water the leaves - just the soil.

These are just some ideas.

Good Gardening!

Hi, I am same as you - doing this for the first time and growing veggies in containers. My cucumbers were not doing so well and some people suggested feeding them. I used a Dr Earth organic fertilizer which was recommended at garden centre. No idea what your problem is, but this seems to have helped mine, the leaves have turned a darker green and the plants are flowering again.

A sudden change in the amount of sunshine could affect them. This is the only thing i can think of. If you have'nt been fertlizing them you might start later when you get them home. Right now might just add to the stress.
Bless your heart you are dedicated.

Anytime you move a container from one place to another, the plant will be affected. I don't know why is happens. That is what probally happened to yours. It takes time for them to get reajusted.

Well Gee! I've had transfer trauma before too. That is not fun. LOL

Also, potted plants of any sort don't have any nutrients left once they've sucked up all that is in the container. make sure to feed them!

what should you feed them?

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I use a teaspoon of plantfood to a 2 gal watersprinkler can every week or two. Than soak the potplant good.

I feed them a seaweed tea.
