I have a clematis vine, small dark purple flowers, wilting. My agony starts with flowers and buds drooping, regardless of the time of day. Within no time I find leaves turning black, wilted and eventually drying out to nothing more than threads of black mess. I have removed the leaves to prevent spreading the "disease" further and just when I thought I had it whipped, it starts a cycle all over. It started rather high up on the vine while the lower half was in good shape. Knowing Clematis roots like a cool environment and can require a good gallon of water a day, depending on the environment, I paid special attention to my watering schedule to make sure I was watering enough and I did see "some" improvement for a couple of weeks.
Its starting all over again and I haven't changed a thing. I got frustrated and decided to prune it back to the lower half and wow did that work, the buds multiplied and the leaves were perky and darn if it isn't starting again! What is going on? It has been 90+ degrees for weeks straight here in Columbus, Ohio with high humidity. It gets shade in the morning hours and torture sun in the afternoon. This was to be my best year for this vine, many compliments and we just loved it. Can you help?
