what flowers to plant around house in zone 7a

Columbia, MD

New home - previous owners have a few rose bushes on end of house that doesn't get much sun. They are planted close to the house- would like to keep roses and add other flowers between and in front of them. Back deck gets full sun most of day until 5pm. I like fragrant low maintenance flowers (and flowers that attract butterflies). Was hoping for something tropical in pots for the deck. I am very nervous that I will choose flowers that won't be happy where I put them. I'm not even sure what can be successfully planted this time of year. Should I order online or look at a local nursery?
Many thanks for any suggestions!

A good local nursery will carry everything that is sure to grow in your area. I order lots on line because there is usually a larger selection.
How are the roses doing with not much sun? They usually need full sun.

When doing a new garden, I wait a full year to see what grows where and what comes up and I do a lot of planning(that's just me) Annuals are probably the best bet for now, with this crazy heat new plants have to be watched carefully they won't get fried.

This on line nursery is one of my favs and I love their advanced search.

another one that has a good advanced search is

and they are both in the Top 30 Watchdog

Hope this helps

Flowerjen is so right in everything she said. I'd spend the winter looking at catalogs and have fun plannig for spring.
What you could do now is get catalogs for fall planting things like spring flowers. And get them in the ground along with some locally bought mums and whatever else local nurseries have to offer. Your county agent has info for your area also.
I spend the whole winter looking at catalogs and planning. (keeps me sane LOL)
I would avoid box stores unless they have brought prices down to practally nothing.

Thank you so much for your advice! The roses seem to be doing great -- currently getting a couple of hours of sun in the morning.

I haven't had the chance to go to a nursery yet but have spent some time looking at the links am very excited about getting further info from each company. You're both right --this is very fun. Thanks again for the support!
