Newbie looking for chart of info on plant needs - any ideas?

Hi all,

I am new to gardening this year. It all started as my large back yard is sloped and I have dogs... so no grass and lots of erosion problems. I started with several books last winter about landscaping and ground covers, but I quickly got hooked on all the pretty garden pictures.

I bought a tiller and this spring we tilled up several different areas with different sun exposures to make separate garden spaces and terraces. Then I went crazy and ordered a few hundred plants - from roses, to lilies, to ferns, oh my!! While I am loving it, I am having a hard time remembering which ones want more water/mulch/food than others. I am fine remembering the sun exposures as I planted according to that. Most of the plants are doing fine, but as we get into the heat of summer I am unsure of watering needs for some.

Does anyone know of a chart (internet or book) somewhere that lists all this in one place? I know I can make my own spreadsheet, but thought I would check before spending the time indoors instead of out!

I am loving Dave's Garden - so glad I found you.

Thank you - RJ

RJ, check with your local Extension Office. Most land grant universities have brochures and/or printouts available with this type of information. Welcome to DG!!

RJ, I like Missouriplants.com it gives habitat pics and what birds and butterflies it will attract.

I've never seen a full chart for watering needs.
Here's an indicator chart when to water

When you get your plants you can notate the water requirements on a label with the name.

Thanks everyone. I also found one of my computer programs will give me a list of my plants with what to do each month (mulch/prune/feed, etc) which will be helpful. It is an old program so I wasn't sure it would run on windows 7, but I got it to work. It is called "Garden Composer 2005".

In time I will be able to make my own chart, but just too much to do outside right now.

Thanks again - RJ
