potato question???

Virginia Beach, VA

I had some red potatoes sprouting and so I planted them and now they are healthy with lots of growth. Can I did them and divide them to get more plants? How many potatoes will i get in a plant? Thanks. Belle

Belle,
You can't dig them to divide. The potatoes grow from a sort of "umbilical cord" attached to the root of the vine. What are your temps there now?

Would you mind including your growing Zone under your city/state? Makes it easier to know how to respond. Check our our Potatoes Under Straw/Leaves thread #4 to pick up the conversation. We've all just about finished our potato harvest, and some of us are going to try for a fall crop.

So when does our fall planting start with the potatoe. August or Sept.

Behillman,
We can plant potatoes again mid-to late August. They need a 90-100 day timeframe, and should be short-day varieties. They need to be harvested before our frosts which will kill the vines.

I placed my short-day seed potato order last week, from Ronnigers.com
