russian sage not flowering...help!

rio rancho, NM(Zone 7a)

Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone might have some idea as to why my russian sage isn't blooming. One of them is in full bloom and so is my neighbor's. But, I have one that is three years old (same as the one that is blooming) and it looks like the flower stalks just died before it bloomed. otherwise it is very robust. I don't get it. Anyone have any experience with this happening? thanks taranne

Can you post some pictures?

It is always a mystery as to why some plants thrive and others struggle, even tho they are next to one another. I would dig it up and check the roots, sounds like there is a vascular problem, maybe insects eating, altho that seems unlikely as they are so pungent. Perhaps it sits in a low spot.

what do you mean by 'low spot' ?

A low spot means where water pools. It's feet may be wet. Check the flower stalks. Are there webs on them? May be pretty tightly wrapped and not apparent at a distance. I've had that happen with some of my salvias. I took a sponge with soapy water in it and pressed the plant branches between my hand and the sponge. Make sure both sides of leaves and stalks get a good soaping. It helped the salvias adn my butterfly bush that had mites. Also my Russian sage is just now starting to bloom, could be a late bloomer.

thanks for the good info. It did finally bloom and seems to be pretty healthy now so maybe it is just a late bloomer. I did have spider mites on some juniper bushes in the front yard and I just kept watering them down every couple days. seems the whole neighborhood has em. but, they seem to be free of mites now, so that's good. thanks again. taranne
