We just planted a bunch of apple trees and discovered they have Cedar Apple Rust. There is a big cedar tree in the midst-we will cut it down. However, we also have established Leyland Cyprus trees close by. Will Leyland Cypress trees also cause Cedar Apple Rust? I can't find it listed that they do, so I don't "think so"; but they are so similar to
Red Cedar Trees ~ I thought I should ask.
Oh boy, if we had only known "before" planting. (sigh)
Any additional hindsight is greatly appreciated!!!
apple trees
No, that particular rust needs a Juniper species as its alternate host. Since your cypress is not a juniper, it won't cause problems. (your "cedar" is actually a juniper species). But...I'd also look around at what your neighbors are growing. If they've also got junipers growing, then getting rid of yours may not solve the problem.
Thanks for the re-assurance! That is what I was hoping to hear!
