In the pic is the spot I need help with. When the lillies are flowering it is beauitful but then The rains and wind comes I lose all my petals I am left with just a bunch of green. I would like a splash of color that grows lower to the ground that compliment the Burgandy and yellow lillies when they are in bloom with blooms that withside the rain and wind any ideas?
How to complement my Lilies?
Do you want perennials or annuals there?
I perfer perennials here I have two other large areas that I have annuals in.
how about lavender, phlox, rudbekia, echinacea, veronica, shasta daisy, to name a few
Are you zone 6? Verbena is nice perennial if you aren't too cold.
Short reblooming daylilies provide a lot of value for next to no effort. Selections that are relatively short include 'Happy Returns' (yellow), 'Pardon Me' (brick red), and 'Stella d'Oro' (orangey gold).
There are lots more flavors of Hemerocallis out there. You have to decide color combos that suit you, but there aren't many other perennials that are as durable and easy to find, and approach carefree status in a broad range of growing conditions.
You also might consider dropping in some drought tolerant cutback shrubs for additional summer color and structure. These could include Perovskia, Caryopteris, Indigofera, and some of the dwarf Lagerstroemia like 'Chickasaw' and 'Pocomoke'.
Thanks, I didn't even know there were lilies that rebloom, that would be perfect are they Bulbs as well?
Hemerocallis (Daylilies) species and cultivars are not Lilies (Lilium spp.) though the flowers somewhat resemble each other. I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong impression with my suggestion.
Daylilies are perennials with extensive tuberous roots. They do not grow from bulbs like Lilium spp.
Take a look at entries in PlantFiles for more information on the wide range of Daylilies that may suit your interest.
Thanks I will look them up. sounds like a great idea anyway. Don't mind me I am completely flower stupid. I have always lived in landscaped apartments until my husband and I bought our house. I didn't realize how much work go into a nice yard. I do however think Landscapers and gardeners get paid way too little LOL.
