I planted a seed mixure last year ( which I regret But that is another story Note to self if you love symmetry Stay away from seed mixes they will make you crazy) anyway One plant I have that I like is 1 single Lupine. I want to ask 2 questions
1) When should I expect to see buds or blooms this is year 2 after planting. I hear they do not bloom in the first year,
2) I have read that they root very deep and should not be moved does that mean I am stuck with the odd random placement by the mixed seed pack or is there a safe way to move it?
questions about Lupine
In my experience, yes, lupines don't like to be moved much. You can try it, but be prepared for the plant to sulk. Keep it watered deeply and regularly and it should be okay, though. You'll just need to give it a little extra attention.
I've had lupines bloom the second year from seed. I would guess they should be done blooming already in your area, since they're just finished here in zone 5. You probably won't see blooms this year unless your plant happens to be...wait for it!...a late bloomer. ;)
Lupines, at least for me, have always been finicky. Your mileage may vary. I see gardeners growing lupines like crazy, and when they like the soil/conditions they're gorgeous plants. My suggestion is that if you see them growing and blooming in your neighborhood, stick with it and see what you can accomplish. If not, there may be a reason for that (they don't like the soil in your area, or the weather conditions, etc.) and you're going to find you have a high maintenance plant. Some gardeners like to put forth the effort. Me, I prefer to stick with what works. I've tried lupines because I do think they're pretty, but when they didn't thrive I opted for some more tried-and-true perennials.
I grew mine from seed. This is the second year and they did bloom.Only 2 flowers, but they were really nice.I also transplanted this year in early spring. This might be why I only got 2 flowers?Like most perennials the 3rd year is best.I don't regret moving them and look forward to next year.Edge
