Ipomoea pandurata

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Pandy will be blooming in a couple of days. I won't have as many blooms this yr
I broke his main growing stem as it emerged in April. All of the up-coming growth
and blooms will be from the secondary stems.

Mine is up about 4', but nary a bud nor bloom - no idea why. It has always bloomed beautifully in the past many years, but not this year.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Kay, well we did have an extra cold winter but since it
is hardy, that should not have bothered your vine. Is yours in a
container or in the ground? If it's in a container, maybe it needs repotting
or fed.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Probably fertilizer. Or does this vine need green growth on it BEFORE it will produce blooms?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Mine is in the ground. I don't fertilize it.

My pandy vine has survived having been started indoors over the winter. I had a series of them from seeds sent to me by Jackie and Debra, but all the rest did not survive being mite infested. I couldn't keep the pests off of them. The strain I have growing is from Debra/Kansas.

Adding fertilizer is not always the answer to plant problems.

Mine came from the woods of northwestern Missouri - it grows wild there.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Kay, it probably doesn't need fert since it's in the ground. The amazing #
of blooms I had open every day last yr was with no fertilizer.
Joseph, I don't get mites on mine. The mites dont bother it I guess cause it's
not in a pot.
Starting them in the house might be the culprit. The mites find them quickly. Much better if these are started outside where they are to grow.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Becky as soon as my vine starts putting out new green growth, the buds
start forming at the same time.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I totally agree with Joseph that Fertilizer is NOT always the answer - Especially native plants.
My Panduratas are LOADED with buds and they are in full bloom in our area along the highways.
Hey Joseph, why don't you try Bayer Advanced 2-in-1 for your mites.

Is the Bayer product available retail?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes, Bayer is available at all the box stores for around $20 - worth a LOT more - it wards off many, many plant troubles!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Joseph,

Yes, there are several places that carry these products now since they are becoming so popular. Additionally, they have added many more new products within the last year. I have bought from Wal-Mart/Lowes/Atwoods/Tractor Supply. So, just about any large store that carries gardening supplies should have it.

Here is what I use on all of my MGs

This one has a Rust Control

Here is link to their products

Plus you can search for a store in your area, as well as search for your problem which will recommend what to use

I swear by this stuff.

the pandies here along our highways dont get nothing but what nature gives them and they have plenty of blooms. i have learned with native plants treat them like they are treated in the wild. they dont get nothing special but what mother nature gives them and they end up doing just fine.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Joseph,

Here you go.
This is the one I believe you need for your mites and it does not harm the MGs.

3-In-1 Insect, Disease & Mite Control
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/tree-shrub-care/products/3-in-1-insect-disease-mite-control

There is also a video at this link

This is the ONLY thing that we have found to kill the monster Black Flea Beatle Bugs that you ID'd for me. - AND IT WORKS! Otherwise, these guys would have totally demolished my JMGs

We have the one you hook up to your water hose.

Emma

Thanks, Emma. I will look for it in the hardware store.

Bayer Advanced products are very harmful to butterflies and hummers. I contacted Bayer about that a couple of years ago and they recommended I NOT use their systematic pesticides if I was trying to attract or welcome such creatures to my yard. To me, it is just another poison we are adding to our environment.

Wow Jackie, awesome blooms.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Helena, I love this one. Does all the work by itself, no help from me.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Mine didn't bloom this year and the season has passed. I just got back from Missouri - they are blooming all along the roadways.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - It appears that your Ipomoea pandurata gets better with age. Every year that passes, it seems to get bigger and better! Most plants take 3 years to really start showing off. I think the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap! I've heard that root growth takes place the first year and then they slowly start growing the second year. By the third year they are well established and off running! Seems your pandurata is doing just that! How many years have you had it? It is quite beautiful! Does it only bloom in the Spring/Early Summer?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky. It is a true perennial. As you said, it sleeps the 1st yr, creeps the 2nd
and leaps the 3rd yr. I planted mine in July 06, bloomed 1st in June of 08
which was it's 3rd growing season.
It bloomed for 2 months last yr, early June thru the end of July.
If I han't got careless this yr and broke out my main growing stem, it would have
grown to a huge size this season.

Kay, I can't imagine why your pandy didn't bloom this yr. I don't think
your tuber is damaged since there's nothing wrong with the lvs. Very strrange indeed.

My Youjiro extra small this morning, pandy 3 and 1/2 to 4 inches across.

Beautiful blooms twining together! :-)

Thanks Becky.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

beautiful pandurata Jackie, I am jealous. My one and only sprout from all three people didn't make it out the door. I havn't seen any seedlings up that I have scattered around. I am prolly going to go back out into the country and check on my Native vines out there. Yours are gorgeous, and I agree that those vines do not need any care other than what they are used to out in the country.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, I plan on sending you more sds as soon as I can.
So sorry your's didn't make it. I think you will have a better chance if you plant these direct in the ground. At the first sign of cold weather, pandy retreats underground.
Mark its spot well. You could mulch it if you were worried about it making it thru that first winter
Since your's didn't survive to be planted outside, we bypass all of those problems when you plant it right in the ground where you want it to grow.

i want mine to look like yours. im jealous. hehe mine got a long ways to grow to be like that though

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Your vine is gorgeous! What a lovely vine to see each morning! :-) :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

You're welcome Debra.
Marie, good to know your vine is doing fine. Yes they do well planted where you want it to grow. That's how I started mine in 06.
Marie, Your vine may or may not bloom in 2011, more likely 2012
Thanks Becky, I love this vine.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

if you ever get a few seeds agian just maybe one or two let me know will work something out. he really does need a friend. got a big ole trllis put them 4 or 5 seeds at and one come up and he is only about 2 if that tall on a 4 by 8 tellis. looks lonely out there. hehe

WOW that long to wait ok keeping fingers crossed for next year. i am not a patient person. But thats cool will wait though if what i have to do. hehe

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Marie, Yes this one is definitely worth waiting on to bloom.
Ordinarily takes 2 yrs which is 3 growing seasons. Rie yours is
sleeping this 1st yr. Next yr the vine itself will grow a lot more. By 2012
the vine will really take off, flowers too.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Do you have a picture of your vine, Marie? I would like to see a young vine.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Marie, forgot to say I will put aside a couple more sds for you.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)
