Yesterday I saw a wonderful poinsettia. It was four years old, huge and had lots of large blooms. I am wondering if anyone out there has any idea how to achieve this. I have planted the one from Christmas 2009 in my garden, in the shade. I would like instructions on bringing it in and achieving a bloom at Christmas 2010.
Poinsettias
Here's an article that tells you what to do: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/champaign/homeowners/021228.html You'll have to put some effort into making sure it gets the right number of hours of darkness leading up to Christmas so that it'll bloom. Also, many poinsettias that you buy at the store have been treated with growth regulators to keep them nice and compact, but when you keep them to the next year those effects wear off and it's likely to be leggier and not look quite as nice the 2nd year. For those reasons many people choose to buy new ones each year, but if you want to keep yours and get it to bloom again follow the instructions in the article.
