I was hoping someone could tell me how I might be able to to get individual nutrients, such as:
nitrogen ┐
phosphorus │ of course
potassium ┘
But also:
calcium
magnesium │ epsom salts?
iron
sulphur
I'm asking because I want to put these together in specific amounts for an experiment. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Margo
Individual nutrients
N always comes in combo with something else. Urea is the closest form. (NH2)2 CO, Ammonia also only adds nitrogen.
P closest form is Super Phosphate H3(PO4)
K Muriate of Potash ( KCl)
Calcium is a metal. only in salt form is it taken up by plants. Calcium Carbonate ( limestone)
Magnesium also a metal only available to plants in salt (ionic ) form Magnesium hydroxide Epsom salts is magnesium sulphate which will also add your sulfur component.
Iron, only trace amounts are used in ionic form. Iron dust or filings can be added which will will break down and combine with elements in the soil to form usable salts.
Sulfur is available as dusting sulfur or flowers of sulfur.
I cheat - I purchased some trace minerals and add a very small amount to the fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season.
Every 4 - 5 years I use a complete fertilizer with micronutrients like Peters Soil Life. In between I just use a regular N-P-K.
