I have seen some white on some of my squash plants, on the main stem near the base of the plant. Any idea what it is? Is it anything to worry about?
What is this white stuff?
MIght be the beginnings of Squash Vine Borer damage. If your leaves are looking pretty limp by the end of the day, that's probably it. If that is the case, take a paring knife and make a slit lengthwise in the stem where the damage is to just above into the healthy plant tissue. You should see a little white grub. Pick him out and smoosh him. Then tape up the slit with either duct or floral tape. The plant will recover from the surgery if it is still pretty healthy. I had to do that on all of my plants (appx 15 of them) and they are all healthy again.
If it's hot and humid where you are, it could be powdery mildew. It could also be squash vine borer as sapphitestar said. If it's either one, YES, it is something to worry about.
