Help With Rose plant

Chicago, IL

My mother gave me a small redgold rose plant (about 10-12" tall). I transferred it to my garden on Monday. It's now almost totally wilted. I gave it a little tug, but there was quite some resistance so I assumed to root is establishing itself. Is it going to get worse before it gets better? How do I know when it's time to give up on it?

It's probably just transplant shock which is perfectly normal. If you're getting hot weather, you might try to rig up a little shade for it until it gets established a little bit better. And make sure you're giving it enough water but not too much. Wilting doesn't always mean it needs water--sometimes in the heat of the day plants will wilt and then perk up again when the sun's off them and things cool down. I'd check them regularly by sticking your finger down into the soil near the roots--if it's feeling dry then give them a good watering, but if it's still wet then hold off.

Where it's positioned, it will get morning sun until about 3 or 4 but it has not been very hot lately. Maybe late 70's to early 80's but it has been raining almost every day since I planted it. I had the same thing happen to some iris' I planted a couple weeks ago and they're just starting to snap out of it.

If it's been raining every day then I definitely wouldn't water it. I'd give it some time--it could have got a little waterlogged if you've had a lot of rain, but hopefully as it starts to dry out it'll perk up.

Ok, I'll just wait it out and take it from there. Thanks alot!
