Growing tomotes in Florida

New Port Richey, FL

I am a first time veggie grower. I am trying to grow tomatoes in Florida, I live near Tampa. They are going but are not showing any fruit yet. Some of the flowers have dropped off. What am I doing wrong?

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

I lived in Palm Beach County for 30+ years and grew tomatoes in the winter months. I don't know if you would be able to do that in Tampa, I think the weather is colder there during that time.

Tomatoes will not set fruit in hot weather - above 85F - the flowers will drop off, similar to what you have described.

You might want to do a Google search for growing Tomatoes in your County and see what comes up.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I have found that the key to growing great tomatoes in warm climates is:

Plant early - I try to plant out around Valentine's Day
Grow short days to maturity (DTM) varieties
Cherry types perform better/longer in the heat
Offer afternoon shade if your area is really hot

Honeybee is right about the temps causing the plants not to set fruit. If you are growing indeterminate varieties and can get them through the summer, they will start to set fruit again when the temps cool down.

You don't say what zone you're in, but hopefully someone in your general area will chime in with some advice...
