OK... Odd Question

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

I was wondering.. how much produce would I need to plant to sustain one adult? Anyone have an idea?

as in.. how many yellow squash, green beans, corn, tomatoes, and so forth. just curious if it could be possible to grow all of your own produce rather than buy it from a store.

Chik,
Not an odd question at all. There is a link somewhere around here that someone posted once with how much it takes to feed a family. Google it -- the information does exist.

P.S. When you find out, please send me a d-mail, 'cause I'd like to know too!

Thanks.

Hi cue - also keep in mind that some plants give you more bang for your buck so to speak...

Indeterminate tomatoes, squash, pole beans, dry beans (pinto, etc), cut and come again greens (lettuce, chard, spinach) will keep on producing.

Corn, melons, potatoes and the like are a one shot crop and for the most part take a lot of space and are in the ground (taking up a lot of space - lol) for a long time for a minimal amount of produce. Though potatoes would be a good bet to me as they store well.

This is a pretty decent book if you can find it at the library so you don't have to buy it.

There is another I have at home that the name escapes me. I will have to look...

Welcome sis! You can always grow vertically as well. Maximize your space!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

woukdnt growing vertically be difficult with somethings tho? like... how does one grow carrots.. or squash vertically??? lol

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Carrots, not so much - lol... Squash will grow "up" if you cage it. Melons and other viney crops you can trellis. Not so easy with giant watermelons but fairly easy with the small icebox types. I have heard people use pantyhose and "gasp" bras to give the fruit support...

they do quit well in cages that way lol

hahaha loca... bras for the 'melons' HAHAHAHAHAHAH hehehehehehehe... ROTFLMBO

panty hose work the best the melon still gets sun .
